DepSpid

Rules and Policies

Run DepSpid only on authorized computers connected with an authorized internet connection

Run DepSpid only on computers and internet connection that you own, or for which you have obtained the owner's permission. Some companies and schools have policies that prohibit using their computers and internet connection for projects such as DepSpid.

How DepSpid will use your computer

When you run DepSpid on your computer, it will use part of the computer's CPU power, disk space, and network bandwidth. You can control how much of your resources are used by DepSpid, and when it uses them.

DepSpid uses your internet connection to analyze random web sites. Nobody can control which web sites will be analyzed from which computer. The owner of the internet connection needs to know that the computers running DepSpid may download HTML pages of sites which you would never visit yourself. It's ensured that DepSpid will try to download HTML pages only and never download other things like executables, images or other stuff which may contain dangerous content. However, in some countries it may even be forbidden to access specific sites. If the country you live in belongs to such a country or if you're unsure about it, you should not run DepSpid.

The DepSpid application transfers huge amounts of HTML pages resulting in a high network traffic. If you pay for your internet connection on a traffic based rate, you should not run DepSpid to avoid high costs. If you pay on a time based rate, you should configure your computer to not automatically connect to the internet when DepSpid asks for a network connection or your computer might stay connected most of the time.

The work done by your computer contributes to the goals of DepSpid, as described on its web site. The application programs may change from time to time.

Privacy policy

Your account on DepSpid is identified by a name that you choose. This name may be shown on the DepSpid web site, along with a summary of the work your computer has done for DepSpid. If you want to be anonymous, choose a name that doesn't reveal your identity.

If you participate in DepSpid, information about your computer (such as its processor type, amount of memory, etc.) will be recorded by DepSpid and used to decide what type of work to assign to your computer. This information will also be shown on DepSpid's web site. Nothing that reveals your computer's location (e.g. its domain name or network address) will be shown.

To participate in DepSpid, you must give an address where you receive email. This address will not be shown on the DepSpid web site or shared with organizations. DepSpid may send you periodic newsletters; however, you can opt out at any time.

Is it safe to run DepSpid?

Any time you download a program through the Internet you are taking a chance: the program might have dangerous errors, or the download server might have been hacked. DepSpid has made efforts to minimize these risks. We have tested our applications carefully. Our servers are behind a firewall and are configured for high security. To ensure the integrity of program downloads, all executable files are digitally signed on a secure computer not connected to the Internet.

Other projects use the same platform, BOINC or PerlBOINC, as DepSpid. You may want to consider participating in one or more of these projects. By doing so, your computer will do useful work even when DepSpid has no work available for it and during the network phase of DepSpid which doesn't use much of your CPU power.

These other projects are not associated with DepSpid, and we cannot vouch for their security practices or the nature of their research. Join them at your own risk.
